Durante los últimos 24 años, los obsesivos coleccionistas música y discos en Usenet(1) han estado  trabajando en el Proyecto Whitburn, una monumental tarea para preservar y compartir grabaciones de  alta calidad de todas las canciones populares y exitosas desde la década de 1890. Para ordenar y  coordinar su tarea, crearon una base de datos con más de 135.000 canciones, que incluye los datos de  cada una,  incluida la duración de cada canción, los BPM, los compositores, el sello y la posición en el  chart semana a semana.

Historia del Proyecto Whitburn

El Proyecto Whitburn, que lleva el nombre de Joel Whitburn (por Joel fundador de Record Research que se dedica a analizar y catalogar los charts pubicados por la revista Billboard) y se dedica a compaginar y completar las listas y los datos los libros editado y autorizados por Billboard. El proyecto Whitburn comenzó allá por 1998 (cuando todo se hacía por Dial-Up), y un reducido grupo de coleccionistas unieron sus recursos para crear una colección de MP3 de cada uno de los TOP 40. En sus inicios probaron con el  intercambio de archivos en redes P2P, pero debido a los evidentes problemas para volver eficiente la distribución de semejante volumen de datos, finalmente optaron por utilizar USENET.



Que es USENET ?


Pueden haber leído sobre FTP's, IRC, P2P, Descargas Directas, Emule, Torrent, pero seguro casi nada  sobre USENET. Para los de la vieja escuela que comenzaron utilizando BBS para comunicarse y descargar  material en los 80's en la era dorada de commodore 64, Amiga y del MS-DOS (saludos para "El Gritón"  Ardita !) , USENET no es extraña (0day Iluminati Way) . Hoy apesar de que el usuario medio  conoce el P2P, y las descargas directas, ignora la existencia de USENET y de los millones de TB que se transfieren a diario por los newsgroups binarios.

¿Que son las News?

Las News o Usenet datan de 1979, usan el protocolo NNTP y se desarrolló originariamente para los  sistemas UNIX, en un año, 50 servidores UNIX participaban en el intercambio de mensajes.  Actualmente, hay miles de servidores que intercambian los mensajes de Usenet, con capacidades de  almacenamiento del orden millones de TB que intercambia los mensajes a nivel global, alrededor de  toda la Tierra. Como curiosidad, 20 años mas tarde, en 1999, nace el protocolo HTTP que es el que se  usa en las paginas web (WWW), el Internet que conocemos actualmente.

Las NEWS o USENET como se le conoce de forma común es un sistema de intercambio de mensajes  que intercambia mensajes electrónicamente por todo el mundo de forma estándar. Los mensajes  intercambiados en USENET están organizados por temática en categorías llamadas grupos de news (o  foros). Usenet, es por lo tanto una gran colección de mensajes transferidos de una máquina a otra. Los  mensajes que pueden contener tanto texto plano como datos binarios codificados. Las News fueron muy  populares en los inicios de internet, pues eran los FOROS de internet, se estructuran en distintos grupos de muy variada tematica.

Ventajas de las News:

La principal es la VELOCIDAD, siempre la descarga es a tope de servicio de transferencia que se  disponga. Las subidas de material son a nivel MUNDIAL, lo que es subido a un servidor, de forma  automática se reparte al resto de los servidores de todo el mundo. Un archivo se sube desde Argentina y  en un minuto está en todos los servidores.

La Ventaja y Desventaja con USENET

Por desgracia hay que usar Servidores Pagos, casi todos los proveedores de Internet suelen tener su  servidor de News (menos Fibertel, Claro o IPLAN), pero suelen filtrar los grupos binarios (los grupos  binarios son los grupos donde se transfieren archivos ZIP, RAR, AVI, MP3, FLAC, etc...). Las subidas  caducan, le llaman retención de los grupos binarios, segun el proveedor varian de 1000 a 5000 dias.  Osea que si subo un disco hoy, está dando vueltas en USENET por 13 AÑOS !!!,  durante 13 años voy a  poder descargar todo lo que se haya subido en ese lapso en TODOS LOS GRUPOS, el contenido que se distribuye en USENET no puede ser eliminado ! (Si no conocen USENET no conocen nada!).

Contenidos en USENET

Hay de todo, musica en todos los formatos (zip, rar, avi,, iso, mp3, wav, aiff, ape, flac), juegos para  todas las Consolas, Videos, Peliculas, libros, en HD y Bluy-ray completos, de todo, y todo lo 0Day. Todo lo que aparece en USENET luego se ve duplicado en la web. En resumidas cuentas USENET se utiliza para la distribución masiva de contenidos que de otra manera resultaría imposible. Ya que estamos pueden visitar mi otro blog en donde inicié hace 17 años el proyecto de rescatar juegos y software y distribuir más de 7000 Diskettes de 5 1/4 de Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, e IBM PC y otros 4000 CD's, y para rescatar cracks, y cepillar protecciones. Las hojas de Excel se crearon para ayudar a verificar que las colecciones estuvieran completas, con nuevas versiones actualizadas en los grupos de NEWS semanalmente. Más tarde, otros coleccionistas empezaron a darle otra dinámica y herramientas para renombrar bien los archivos  correctamente y ubicar las canciones faltantes.

Originalmente, la mayor parte del Proyecto Whitburn era una simple base de datos, pero a medida que el proyecto creció, se dejaron de lado los libros de Whitburn, ya que puso en evidencia al analizar los datos que el sistema de calificación estaba errado y fué falsificado para favorecer a tal o cual discográfica, promotor, o artista. (ver el caso Playola, como se denomina a todos los artilugios para inflar una canción a fin de que tenga una difusión fantasma que no se condice con la real ni con la preferencia del público).

Hay varias hojas de Excel de Whitburn que se actualizan cada tanto en USENET, pero la más útil es “Billboard Pop ME (1890-2008)”, que se publica en alt.binaries.sounds.whitburn.pop.

Nota: Estoy casi seguro que esta base de datos viola los derechos de autor de Billboard y Record Research.  Por tal motivo el tema Whitburn Proyect ha sido constantemente eliminado por google. Por tal motivo la base de datos no se encuentra a simple vista de google. Hay que usar el sentido común y la inteligencia para encontrarlos.

Alguno se preguntará ... pero porqué no usan torrents ?. Pues porque hay un problemita, los archivos se cambian constantemente, ya que se consiguen mejores versiones de audio de las canciones a diario. Antes por ejemplo solo se conetaba con una version mal ripeada de un vinilo y de repente salió una editada en CD. Ya sabemos que la calidad no es la misma, pero eso es otro tema, al menos se presume que el trabajo de masterización se hizo sobre los masters originales. Y digo presumo porque demasiados masters han desaparecido, y al momento de analizar el el archivo de un rip de CD se observa que la fuente original ha sido un vinilo y no un master. Y por otro lado los sitios que se podría decir decentes de torrents, no admiten en sus filas una compilación amateur que contenga calidades tan dispares, además de que misteriosamente cuando los colgaron en algún momento hace mucho tiempo fueron eliminados, unos dicen que por que se les tiró la Billboard encima... no me consta.

Se debe prestar atención a los datos de cada archivo, que representan la fuente desde la cual se obtuvo el mismo, ya sea Vinilo, CD o CD-r. Con el paso de los años el proyecto se puso mucho más ambicioso, ya que al principio se tenia por aceptable una calidad de 96 kbps, luego 128 kbps, luego 320 kbps, y a estas alturas es FLAC !. Osea que quienes participan del proyecto desde hace mucho, tienen al menos dos copias de todo en distintas calidades... como es mi caso.

Pero los seres humanos son inquietos, y siempre se aprende copiando una buena idea. Al margen del Whitburn Proyect, los ingleses no quisieron quedarse atrás y se organizaron detrás del Britburn Proyect (originales con el nombre), para realizar el mismo trabajo pero con sus propios charts. Algo de razón tienen ya que la música ranqueada en USA difiere totalmente a de UK y el resto de Europa. Y no, ... no me pregunten por el Argentburn !

Y porqué menciono el Argentburn ?. Pues desgraciadamente si bien tuvimos en las décadas del 60s, 70s y 80s revistas de musica de alta circulación, los charts simplemente se limitaban a un TOP 40 y no establecieron ningún tipo de método "científico" para clasificar y ranquear la música. Todo fué según el paladar del editor y del sobre que recibiera de la discográfica o del promotor

Dicho todo esto veamos el año 1974 del Whitburn Proyect Hot Dance Disco de 1974, que fué el primer año en que la Billboard empezó a catalogar la musica disco, para ser más preciso el 26 de Octubre de 1974, que curiosamente es su portada tiene de cabecera una nota sobre "La represión de la piratería impulsa las ventas de cintas legales" :)


Eso nos lleva a la página 22 en dónde aparece por primera vez el famoso Disco Action, redactado por nada mas ni nada menos que el famoso Tom Moulton !



Ahora vamos a ampliar la imagen para ver bien:



Ahora lo que interesa es como terminó el Chart al finalizar el año una vez ingresadas en la base de datos uno a uno todos los rankings semanales de 1974:


La base de datos contiene los tracks charteados en el Hot Dance / Disco por Billboard desde 1974 hasta el presente en base a encuestas de DJ de discotecas. El esquema de numeración se tomó de la serie de libros de Joel Whitburn, que se puede encontrar en www.recordresearch.com. Las tracks que se clasifiquen en un empate se numeran en orden alfabético. Los tracks del lado B se enumeran con el sufijo "b", como "d1974_100b". Hay ocasiones en las que varios tracks son tomados del mismo LP y por eso comparten el número en el chart. Esos tracks se identifican mediante un punto y un número, como "d1974_100.1, d1974_100.2, etc ...". Toda la información ha sido verificada del libro Whitburn Dance / Disco. Los tiempos de duración de los tracks se han verificado visualmente con el sello del disco, en allmusic.com o en discogs.com. Todas los tracks provienen de CD cuando es posible siempre que coincidan EXACTAMENTE con el equivalente en vinilo. En el rubro Disco / Dance, un solo título pudo ser editado en muchos sellos y/o formatos diferentes, sin mencionar la cantidad de mezclas y remixes. A veces, obtener la versión correcta del chart puede ser un verdadero desafío, especialmente cuando no se puede determinar la fuente original del mp3. La regla general es que si un track cae dentro de un margen de +/- 3-7 segundos correspondiente a del chart, por lo general es la versión correcta. Si alguien tiene una versión correcta y verificada de una canción, súbala en alt.binaries.sounds.whitburn.pop o alt.binaries.sounds.m y nombre de forma apropiada el archivo. ¡Todas las subidas serán apreciadas! ¡Gracias por adelantado!

Un libro que tenía en carpeta desde el año pasado para escanear. Es la traducción al español de libro de Peter Shapiro, "Turn The Beat Around" (2005). Es un excelente libro escrito por un pediodista especializado en música.

Crítica Destructiva a la Edición en Español
Como regular consumidor de libros me veo en la obligación de realizar algunos tristes y lamentables comentarios con respecto a este libro y edición, para quienes lo quieran comprar.

1) Es un libro INCOMPLETO. Si, incompleto, la edición original en inglés incluye (como todo libro y edición que se precie) un índice temático, un apartado de bibliografía y precisamente por tratarse de un libro sobre música y canciones un indice de las canciones mencionadas en el libro. Además la edición original incluye un indice temporal por año de los hechos relevantes, dado que no deja de ser un ensayo histórico. Todos, absolutamete todos los apartados descriptos incluidos en la edición original en inglés NO EXISTEN EN LA EDICION EN ESPAÑOL. Vaya uno a saber los motivos de la editorial para truncar así un libro, convirtiéndolo en una prisión de palabras sin nexo, guía o relación.

2) Es una edición minibooket. Osea el libro es de tamaño reducido para las 416 páginas que lo integran. Lo que significa que la letra también es pequeña, lo que en ocasiones obliga a forzar la vista, ya que se trata de un libro de puro texto sin una sola imágen. No resulta nada cómodo para leer y disfrutar.

3) La traducción es en demasiadas ocasiones forzada, intentando castellanizar términos y letras de canciones. Con un resultado que sinceramente en muchas ocasiones resulta un atentado al inglés, haciendo gala del spangrish o el kiwi-melon. Da la plena impresión que la traductora, Agostina Marchi sabrá mucho de inglés, pero música y letra de canciones se las llevó a marzo. Para traducir hay que traducir en sentido contextualizado y no literalmente, cosa que termina convirtiéndose en una fea costumbre.

4) El papel en el que está impreso no es de la mejor calidad.

5) La provocadora foto que ilustra la tapa no tiene créditos !. Si, sin créditos, para el fotógrafo o el artista, la habrán encontrado en internet (parece ser de una fiesta en Studio 54)?. Y después algunos chillan por el copyright y los derechos de autor.


Gracias a un amigo Holandés acá está parte de lo que le falta al libro.
